How to install CentOS 7 with Screenshots

Aside Linux been easy to use, setting it up(Installing) is also easy and fast. This tutorial will guide you install and run linux on your PC.

1. Download the ISO image of the operating system.
      First download the iso image of Centos 7 and burn it unto a DVD or a bootable flash drive. How to make a flash drive bootable .

2. Change the boot order.
After making a bootable USB, insert the drive or DVD and restart the system. Press F10 to enter into the BIOS of your PC (this key varies from every PC). Go to Boot or Boot order and select the DVD or the bootable USB. Read the instructions to save and exit. For powerful PC the system should automatically determine a a new boot device to boot from.

3. Install Centos 7
Select Install CentOS 7 for quick install or select Test this media & install CentOS 7 to run a test on the iso image and then install it.

4. Select Language
Select your preferred language and click on continue.

5. Installation summary
If you see this page then you are almost there. This is where much configurations are made.
Under LOCALIZATION select your time zone (DATE & TIME) and keyboard type (KEYBOARD). After selecting each section click on Done to return to this page.

6. Software selection.
On the Installation summary click on SOFTWARE SELECTION to open the page below. This is where you will select how your CentOS environment should look like. The two most common environments are Minimal Install and GNOME Desktop.
If you choose minimal Install there will be no Graphical User Interface. All you see is the Command Line Interface. Your mouse will be disabled, you cant click on the screen. You interact with the system using command.
I won't recommend Minimal Install for beginners.
Still on the SOFTWARE SELECTION page, select GNOME Desktop. This is the widely used CentOS 7 environment on PC and on companies servers. It is user friendly with a beautiful Graphical User Interface where you can click on the Desktop.
This environment is much recommended.
Please select the following Add-Ons

  • GNOME Applications
  • Internet Applications
  • Office Suite and Productivity
  • Compatibility Libraries
  • Development Tools
  • Security Tools
  • System Administrators Tools
After selecting the above Add-Ons click on Done. ( This will take you back to the Installation  summary page ).

7. Disk Partition.
On the Installation summary page select SOFTWARE DESTINATION. This is where you partition your hard-disk.

NB: If your hard disk is less than 100G i will recommend you choose automatic partition.
If your hard disk is greater 100G then i also recommend you do a manual partitioning.

For automatic partitioning, select Automatically configure partitioning and I would like to make additional space available. click on Done.

Click on Delete All and then click on Reclaim space

Click on Done to move to the installation summary page.

If you want to manually partition the disk then follow this steps else skip.
First select Automatically configure partitioning and I would like to make additional space available to delete all files from the drive.
Select I will configure partitioning and click Done.The page below should appear.
Please pay attention to this page. Your page should look similar or the same as this. Make sure the partition scheme is LVM.

Now click on the + button to add the mount points. The page below should appear.
Base on your hard disk size please assigned the desired capacity percentage to theh mount point.
Mount point                desired capacity %
       /                                 18% G
      /var                             43% G
      /home                         26% G
       swap                          twice your RAM size. G
       /boot                          6% G
       biosboot                     0.5% G

Please take time to calculate the percentages out from your total hard disk size.

Click on Done and then accept changes.

8. Network
On the Installation summary page click on NETWORK & HOSTNAME to show this page. On the left side select your network interface. In my case am using an Ethernet cable.
NB: You can skip this step if you are not connected to the internet.

At the bottom type in your hostname. Every system should be identify by a hostname. it can be your name.something. In my case i use noble.axis.com A default hostname is provided.(localhost.localdomain)
Click on Done.

9. Setting up Root password and User Account.
Your system has started the installation. This will take some time to complete.
Click on ROOT PASSWORD and USER CREATION to set your root password and user account.

For weak password click on the Done twice.


The installation is now complete.
NB: Before you click on the Reboot button please remove the installation device(DVD or flash drive) from the PC.

9. Finish Configuration.
Click on LICENSE INFORMATION and accept the licensing agreement. Finally click on FINISH CONFIGURATION.


10. Login
Login and start enjoying the best operating system
